Poeta estadounidense. Stevens ejerció la carrera de abogado en Nueva York antes de unirse en 1916 a una compañía de seguros en Hartford, de la que llegó a ser vicepresidente hasta su fallecimiento. Sus poemas comienzan a aparecer en revistas literarias en 1914. En Harmonium (1923), su primer y más brillante libro desde el punto de vista verbal, introdujo el tema esencial de su obra poética y ensayística, y bajo el cual se unifican todas sus ideas: la relación entre la imaginación y la realidad. En su poesía posterior, recopilada en libros como Ideas de orden (1936), The Man with the Blue Guitar [El hombre de la guitarra azul] (1937) y The Auroras of Autumn [Las auroras de otoño] (1950), siguió explorando este tema con mayor profundidad y rigor. No fue sino hasta bien avanzada su vida que comenzó a ser leído y reconocido como un poeta importante. Recibió el Premio Pulitzer tardíamente en 1955 con sus Poemas completos. Se lo considera uno de los más grandes poetas estadounidenses del s. XX.
